Commercial Item Determination: One-Day Essentials
Commercial Item Determination
This course is for government personnel and federal contractors who want the essentials of commercial item determinations in half the time.
The Revolutionary FAR Overhaul rebuilt Part 12, cut roughly 30% of the clauses, and added construction to the definition of commercial services — making commercial buying the streamlined, preferred default, with more flexibility than before.
This course teaches you to make sense of those changes and apply them with confidence. We develop an understanding of what a commercial product or service is — and what it isn't — what a determination requires and when, and how to use market research to make the call. We also cover what you need to know about terminations for commercial products and services. And we work through how to document the determination — building a written record that captures your reasoning and the evidence behind it, so the determination stands up to review, audit, or challenge down the road. Throughout, we work from the most current guidance, including the RFO FAR Part 12 itself, the RFO FAR Part 12 Practitioner Album, and the RFO FAR Companion.
This course is taught by Melinda Milheim, JD, who draws on her law degree, MBA studies, and the experience she earned working on more than $7.7 billion in contracts as a Contract Specialist and COR at the U.S. Navy and the Department of Health and Human Services / Indian Health Service. An award-winning instructor who has taught more than 1,000 federal acquisition workforce students across 20-plus agencies, Melinda brings a warm, engaging style to the classroom — she breaks complicated topics into easy-to-understand pieces and, most importantly, focuses on the "why" behind the "how," so students leave with a true understanding of the underlying concepts and the ability to apply them on the job immediately.
Best for: Federal government personnel and contractors who want a better understanding of commercial item requirements.
Format: Available as a one-day course, delivered in person or virtually. Eligible attendees earn 8 CLPs. A note on CLPs: This course earns continuous learning points (CLPs) that both defense (DAWIA) and civilian (FAC-C, FAC-COR, and FAC-P/PM) acquisition professionals can apply toward the continuous learning required to maintain certification. Because agencies set their own rules on what qualifies for CLP credit, check with your Acquisition Career Manager (ACM) or component training office to confirm how it applies to your plan.
Phoenix Canyon also offers a two-day version, Commercial Item Determination (2 Day) for those who prefer a deeper dive into the topic.
Pricing is set per engagement. Contact Phoenix Canyon to request a quote.
